Coal Tit

This is my favourite of the tit family. Even though they aren't as brightly coloured or as bold as the Great or Blue Tits they exude charisma and they are just so darn cute! This little fella has been flying in to the feeder, picking up a sunflower seed, and then zooming off again. This isn't unusual. Because Coal Tits are the smallest of the tits they get bullied by other birds (even the only slightly larger Blue Tit) so they come in, grab a single seed and then fly away again so they don't get robbed of their meal or end up in a fight. Blue Tits will also take a single seed but they'll sometimes stick near to the feeder and perch in the same tree and eat and then come back again. When food is plentiful, Coal Tits will pick up seeds and then cache them elsewhere for when the harder Winter weather hits. Just like Jays do with acorns.
