No 103: Crossbill

I've been after these guys for a while - not twitching, you understand, but at one of my top places to visit. I've often seen them reported here, but never seemed to have got my timing right. First, I was tantalised with a quick view, then rewarded with a family group who posed for me for quite some time. More pics here and here. Further along my route, I saw red grouse, meadow pipit and wheatear. Just as I returned to the car, I saw a host of birds feeding on conifer seeds, including more crossbills, goldfinch, greenfinch, blue tit, coal tit, and long-tailed tit.
One fleeting sighting of "ratty" but no hares today. It was very pleasant when the sun came out, but bitterly cold in the wind on the moorland when it disappeared behind a cloud.
Even though it seems that the bird I blipped as a peregrine a couple of weeks ago may very well have been a hobby, and should have been 100. I've decided it would be too complicated to re-number. Shame that I missed out on this, but the hobby remains for another day - I hope!
I've managed to catch up on some but not all of my comments, so if you're still waiting, apologies - I'm getting there slowly.
Off to Birmingham tomorrow for a Get Walking, Keep Walking jamboree, so goodness only knows what bliportunities there will be.
