Glenwood Cemetery

I found out a long time ago...that if you want to see some good fall colors...go in search of old cemeteries. I dropped my doctor off to his Flint office, and headed to the huge Flint library. I noticed this cemetery on the way there.

Their sign stated that the cemetery was started in 1857. According to my math...that's 154 years old. It is divided into 2 parts...east and west. The sign also provided me with my new word of the day. It said the older eastern part contains many pieces of funerary art. What kind of art? Funerary. I don't even want to try to pronounce it, but there were some beautiful statuary.

The cemetery holds 2 Michigan governors...Henry Crapo and Josiah Begole. As I strolled the grounds the headstones read like the history of Flint. James Whiting gave us the Whiting Auditorium...a lovely place for concerts and plays. Dort Highway is named for Dallas Dort...an early auto maker. Other headstones included Ballenger and Pierson, both major highways through the city. The largest tomb contained the remains of Charles Stewart Mott...probably Flint's most well-known citizens. He was one of General Motors founders, and established the Mott Foundation...which still does a lot of great things. If Mr. Mott could see what has happened to General Motors...he would probably roll over in his grave.

Between the beauty of the trees and leaves and statues and the history...it was a great little trek through the grounds.

Someone told me yesterday that my writing reminded them of Andy Rooney. I considered that a real compliment...being a fellow curmudgeon and all. But...I did gently slam (?) down my lap-top...and rushed up to the bathroom to trim my eye-brows. DIDJA EVER NOTICE HOW HARD IT IS TRIM YOUR OWN EYEBROWS? WHEN I GOT DONE...I HAD TO RUN TO WALGREENS TO GET AN EYEBROW PENCIL. EMBARRASING. (Didn't really happen.)
