running commentary

How old?

Scamp is only 4
I am a bit older at 42
But how old is this access into a field to follow the footpath?

Theres probably no way of ever finding out but I wouldn't be surprised to learn it was made a couple of hundred years ago. It's so solid and chunky that it might easily last for hundreds more.

Very old houses are usually subject to restrictive orders which govern what is allowed to be done to them so they remain true to the character and style of the period when they were built.
Theres nothing in place to preserve a structure of this type as far as I know - and thats a shame as one day a hard up farmer might sell the valuable stone and replace it with a cheap wooden stile or a kissing gate, knowing it will last his time out and then somebody else can worry about it rotting away.

(I have now uploaded my shots from last Sundays trip to Newcastle Quayside - see HERE)
