Grandad

Grandad fought in the Great War. Witness to unimaginable horrors, he survived. He never talked about it. He never wanted to travel abroad again, it coloured the rest of his life. Does it colour mine?

Grandad moved to the country when I was born, we visited often. He was a railwayman in later life. When we visited he took me to see the trains at the local junction station. Today I can still access the thrill of a train approaching that I felt as a small child with him. He was also a keen gardener and sowed the seeds of my lifelong passion for plants.

Grandad died when I was six. His influence is still with me. Remembering him.
