Wetherspoons
Today's the day ......................... to go to the pub
Very difficult staff meeting this afternoon, which eventually adjourned to the local Wetherspoons officially known as the Miles Thompson.
It occupies a building designed by the said Miles Thompson architect and erected in 1864 by local philanthropists as a public wash-house and baths. It had facilites for 22 washerwomen and included clothes-horses on rail tracks and two pioneer spin-dryers. The chimney is 70 feet high.
It was intended to alleviate the discomforts of washday for working families living in damp and ill-ventilated cottages. There were 8 large porcelain baths, the lowest charge for a warm bath being for two young women together at threepence each.
No hot baths were taken this evening - but a fair amount of heated discussion went on ...............
