Jean's necklace

Today's the day ......................... to hear some sad news

This is a necklace made for me by Jean, a very good needlewoman, from silk which has been wrapped round wooden beads. The colours of the silk are lovely and it's very light in weight - you would hardly know you have got it on.

Jean and her husband John were regular volunteers at my workplace and used to come and help us every year without fail, staying for a week at a time in our volunteers' flat. The fact that they were well into their 80s was no obstacle. Their friendly enthusiasm was infectious and they were always very popular with visitors and staff alike.

We heard that John had died a week or so ago - and today we got the news that Jean also had passed away. Her daughter said that after John had gone, she had no wish to carry on by herself. She died peacefully in her sleep ......................
