Temple Tours

Just after I completed my Foundation Course in Art & Design I was accepted into Dundee to do jewellery design. At the last minute I had a wobble and decided that it was most definitely painting that I wanted to do. This meant a whole new portfolio and a whole new application process. So, I came back to Edinburgh, got a room in a shared flat and got a full time job in the newly refurbished Lyceum Theater, with the plan of evening classes to build a new folio. Most of my work at the Lyceum was based in the restaurant and the bars, and less regularly I helped out with front of house stuff. One year, however, I took on as much work as I possibly could and found myself working a lot of front of house shifts on the Lyceum Christmas Show. This meant taking in tickets and sitting in the theater through every performance.

Today Rudy and I, his cousin Finlay, my two sisters and my mum went to see the Lyceum's Christmas show of 'Beauty and the Beast'. Within, a few moments of hearing the first lines of the play I realised that this was the very same version that I had sat through so many times a mere 19 years ago. Blimey. At once, I was amazed that it was that long ago and in the same breath that I had somewhere in my brain remembered such huge chunks of the prose. I cannot even remember what I did yesterday...

So. The Lyceum was a brilliant place for me to work - I learnt a lot about theater and it allowed me to meet a huge range of wonderful people. And it made me realise that I definitely did not want to be a full time waitress. My application to Edinburgh College of Art was successful and I continued working part-time at the theater to support my studies.

And finally I am definitely having an end of year nostalgic trip. Fun times those were. And I know who Bertolt Brecht is. Ok.
