Heart of Oak
A grim, grey day so no apologies for picking a subject to fit the mood. Despite recent renovations this old church looks almost derelict, is empty and unwanted. A sorry shadow of it's distant days of glory.
St Martin at Oak takes its name from the oak tree that used to stand in the churchyard and which, in the Middle Ages, housed an image of the Virgin Mary. There is still an oak in the churchyard today and the old tree is also remembered in the name of the street, Oak Street, one of the oldest thoroughfares in the city. Archaeological evidence suggests the street was part of the Saxon village of Coslany, one of the settlements that combined to form the City of Norwich in medieval times. It is thought that the route may have been used in Roman times.
