Arrochar Pier
It was back down the road to Carradale today in much kinder weather than we have had of late. It was a lovely drive with the snow covered hills popping through the clouds and patches of rich blue sky. It really lifts the spirits when the weather is like this and brings hope that Spring is not too far away. Having said that, apparently the weather forecasters are predicting a lengthy cold snap over the next few weeks! As long as it is mostly dry and bright I'll not complain.
We stopped off for a few blips on Loch Lomond when the sun threatened to illuminate the summit of Ben Lomond. However, it never fully materialised as I was hoping.
Instead, today's blip is of Arrochar pier at the head of Loch Long. It is a very photogenic spot and there is always something of interest in the area. Today I was attracted by the patches of blue sky and low clouds that were reflected in the calm loch by the old pier. If you look in LARGE you can see Gulls on the pier and a Cormorant on the red buoy on the right.
The pier has a fascinating history and Arrochar must have been a completely different place when 3 steamers a day would visit in the late nineteenth century. In one of the pictures in the link the 3 steamers are tied up at the same time. There are also pictures of the Waverley when it called here. It looks like the last ferry to visit would have been about 1968.
Its sad to see the old pier rotting away, but it still provides a tangible link to the history of Arrochar, as well as great opportunities for a blip!
