St Andrews
We pass this church every week on our way to the supermarket but it always looked as if it was disused. Most of the windows appear to be cemented up. I have also often wondered what denomination it was, so decided, since I was on my own today, to stop the car and have wander around it .
I came home, did a quick piece of research and was surprised by what I found.
"The village of Auckland St. Andrew, or South Church, as it is now usually called, is situated on the river Gaunless, which is at this place crossed by a stone bridge of one arch, and is one mile south from Bishop Auckland, and eleven south-south-west from Durham. It contains a brewery, and a manure manufacturing business ,formerly occupied as a foundry, but situated in the township of Bishop Auckland. The Gaunless sometimes overflows its banks at this village, and causes considerable damage.
The Parish Church, dedicated to St. Andrew, occupies a commanding position on what was formerly the site of an early Saxon church. The erection of this most interesting structure may be said to date from the early part of the thirteenth century.
By virtue of its size, its imposing position and its antiquity, St. Andrew's church is very much cathedral-like in character and has provided a beautiful medieval focus for the worship of God for almost 800 years.
It is fortunate, too, in having one of the largest and finest pipe organs in County Durham, which helps to enhance the beauty and spirituality of the services through music. The church is also a much appreciated concert venue.
There is also an extensive graveyard associated with the church ,split over three separate areas with lovely old Lichgates at each entrance.
So next time I pass by, I will be able to rest in the fact that this grand old church is still up and running and serving those who attend services there----- or is it?---- as the last entry I can find is for 2011.
