Northern Lights

I saw the Northern Lights on Shetland a few weeks ago - but I'd already posted that days blip, so I was determined that if I got lucky enough to see the Lights again I was definitely going to blip them.

As headed into Kjollefjord at about 6 pm local time, the show started, and went on for several hours. Kjollefjord village is close to 71N and is one of the most northerly of the Hurtigruten stops.

Being on board a ship at night in the high Arctic is a fantastic place to watch the northern lights - you are usually well away from any background light other than the very limited lights that the ship is showing. It is however, a rubbish place to take good photographs of the Lights, even in a sheltered fjord the ship is going to be moving quite a lot. This image was taken while we were in the harbour at the top of the fjord.

In the absence of the Lights I was going to post one of the images I took at the North Cape - I spent a couple of hours there under beautiful clear blue skies....
