Bugsworth Basin
This basin marks the end of the Peak Forest Canal. It was once the heart of industrial activity in the area. Limestone, lime and gritstone came down the Peak Forest Tramway from nearby quarries. Limestone was either burnt at the basin or shipped out straight away in barges.
A very nice 9.5 mile walk today, starting from the Old Hall Inn. Along the Peak Forest Tramway to Bugsworth Basin and then on to Whaley Bridge (where we had an 'interesting' chat with a canal boater). Across the fields to Eccles Pike ~ fantastic views but some b*****ds have stolen the Topography. Then on to Chapel-en-le-Frith for a nice cup of tea and cake at Stocks Cafe (very nice). Then back over the fields (with a great view of the Ferodo brake pad factory ~ I didn't realise it was soo large) to rejoin the Peak Forest Tramway and back to Whitehough.
