Nant Gwrtheyrn

Today's the day .......................... to speak welsh

We went to the Welsh Language Centre at Nant Gwrtheyrn today. It has an incredible setting being based as it is in the old quarrying village of Port Nant on the north coast of the Lleyn Peninsula. You have to take courage in both hands to drive down the steep road with its hairpin bends clinging to the edge of the sea cliffs - but the view from the village when you get there makes it all worthwhile.

The village had its heyday in the 1880s and 90s when most of the cottages were built to house more than 100 workers in the nearby granite quarries. By the middle of the 20th century however there was no market for the stone and the Nant had become a ghost village. The Centre opened in 1982 and since then, over 30,000 learners have attended Welsh language courses.

It certainly is the perfect place to learn Welsh - or as they say here - Y lle delfrydol i ddysgu Cymraeg .....................
