South Harting

In the sunshine this afternoon, St Mary and St Gabriel ‘s, South Harting, near Petersfield. There’s been a church on this site for 800 years. It houses the wonderful sculpture of St Gabriel created by Philip Jackson which I’ve blipped before.

Quite a few famous people have lived in South Harting. Betrand Russell started his experimental school here, Beacon Hill. Anthony Trollope spent his last years living at the Grange. H.G.Wells lived for some time at nearby Uppark, now a National Trust property, when he was a young man and his mother was a lady’s maid there.

The church is part of the United Benefice of Harting and Elsted with Treyford cum Didling, in the Diocese of Chichester. Wonderful names and picturesque villages. I love this area.
