The Victoria Gold Stamping Battery
Today we packed kids, dog and Grandma into the car and drove the hour to Karangahake Gorge so the older ones could bike with their father through the trail along the old railway line. Afterwards, we picnicked beside the old stamp battery. There are only the concrete foundations left, but scattered around and inside are fascinating rusting ruins of the original machinery.
In 1896 the Victoria Battery was the largest Quartz crushing plant for
gold extraction in Australasia.
