Migrant in Moscow

Exit

Crowds exiting from a concert in the Kremlin Palace Theatre this afternoon.  This is the Kutafya Tower ("Кутафья башня") which links through to the Troitskaya Tower ("Trinity Tower"), the main pedestrian entrance to the Kremlin.

The name comes from nothing more auspicious than the Troitskaya Coaching Inn ("Троицкое подворье"), an olden days equivalent of a motel, an editing correction, the Russian version says the name comes from the Troitskaya Monastery, which also existed within the Kremlin grounds during the 17th Century.  One of three earlier names, "Karetnaya", has a connotation to 'coach house' and this may be the reason for the confusion.  Who knows.

Both the Kutafya and Troitskaya were built by an Italian architect Aloisio da Milano between 1495 and 1516 - as were several other features of the Kremlin (built by Italians).
