Ghost Ship

This is the Horizon Fairbanks, moored at the Bellingham Shipping Terminal.  Normally it just sits there, doing nothing, nothing at all.  Once upon a time it hauled containers to Alaska.   Because of low fuel economy, Horizon Lines keeps it idle and pays the Port of Bellingham about $1,000 a day for moorage.  Not sure if logic prevails there.

Back in early December we had some seriously high winds and some of its mooring lines snapped so this 600-foot, 21,000-pound behemoth started drifting around Bellingham Bay.  I'm sure it must have felt liberated and delighted to be doing something even if it was wrong.  In short order, however, a couple of tugboats nudged it back where it belonged and the fun was over.  I believe scrapping is now an option being considered.  I think it might make a great floating hotel.
