Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

Thursday, Jan 15, 2015 Farmers Market Cauliflower

We want to the Farmers Market today at the parking lot at Spencer's Market in Morro Bay. I mostly went to get some photos and I also was hoping to find the "soup lady," and we did! We purchased a large "canning" jar of soup. We served it for our dinner this evening and it was delicious.

I had learned about the "soup lady" in a local magazine this past autumn. This was our first opportunity to taste her soups. I also have wanted to get my hands on her new cook book, but I don't want to purchase it, I want to find it in a local library; and I did.

Inside the cookbook, the introduction reports this message: "The County of San Luis Obispo on California's Central Coast is the state's "middle kingdom." Located equal distance between San Francisco and Los Angeles, and nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Lucia coastal mountain range, its physical and culture environment is as close to ideal as you're likely to find, anywhere. Never too warm, and never too cold, it has one of only five Mediterranean climate zones in the world.

The hidden treasure is remarkable for its remote and jagged coast, miles of pristine beaches, rugged mountain range, charming little beach towns, sweeping vineyards and ranches, old spanish missions, and arguably, the best small city in America, San Luis Obispo.

While its attributes are numerous, perhaps the greatest is the Mediterranean climate. Not only is the weather usually beautiful, it allows for year around and prolific agricultural production. The fertile valleys on both sides of the Santa Lucia Mountains are endowed with rich soil, the warmth of the sun, just enough rain, and a corps of farmers who care deeply about their craft. This happy fact has led to a profusion of organic farms and vibrant farmer's markets throughout the county. SLO County, thus is not only a scenic and cultural gem, it is a virtual Cornucopia of fresh, local and year-around agriculture.

Today was a very good day.
