Hanging Snow

The last two days we’ve had plus temperatures.  The snow on the roof starts to melt, the water trickles down to the roof and acts as a lubricant and suddenly, with a deep long roar/whoosh the wet snow thunders of the roof.
As it hits the ground it compresses into a very hard layer which is OK to walk on but hard to dig away, from the cellar door for instance.  One really wouldn't want to be standing underneath when it goes!
Because of the angled roof on this side of the house it doesn’t glide off so easily. Instead it slides down and then hangs there in a heavy curtain, meaning that we don’t stand around as we go in and out of the house!
