Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

Bread and Butter Pudding saves the day!

Set off early from Edinburgh in grey clouds, not the promised sunshine, but it soon made an appearance as we headed north. We had a fantastic drive - the West Coast is such a scenic part of the country. And we stopped for coffee and an hour's ramble in a nature reserve.

Talking of stopping for a thermos coffee... I usually forget some vital bit, and this time was no different. I forgot the ground coffee, although I did bring instant coffee and a cafetiere. JR never seems to learn to check, but always trusts that all is in order. It usually never is...

That wasn't all that went wrong today to blight the holiday atmosphere. I don't know how it happened, but the B&B that I was instructed to book, which we'd been to before years ago, greeted us with a blank look when we turned up this evening. Don't you just hate that?

Turned out, I hadn't booked there. She kindly rang around several places before she found out where I had, in fact, booked into. At least it was the same town!

When we arrived at the one I had booked into, but hadn't intended to, the lady came out to meet us. As we walked from the car, a man who was also booked in, walked with us and we were chatting. When I said who I was, she looked absolutely horrified - not the welcome I had expected. Not two landladies in one day who don't want to see me! Please!

She exclaimed 'But I thought you were only two!'

Haha- she thought we were a threesome! I can see why she panicked. This room isn't big enough to swing a cat, let alone two people.

The room is about as much room as we used to have in our combi van. With the added luxury of being able to stand up. The ensuite must be the smallest legal space in some EU regulation. But the most amazing thing was that the towels were rolled and twisted into an animal shape. Possibly a dead elephant - there were certainly three 'legs'... or two legs and a trunk. AND there were hand drawn and cut out eyes! I kid you not!! I should have blipped them!

But worst of all - I forgot all my little cords and chargers and do-dackies for downloading photos and uploading to blip!!! I had carefully gathered them all in special little bag to keep them together. AND I can't charge my batteries, so will have to go very easy on the snapping tomorrow. In this part of the country?? That's cruel!

However, the day was not all lost. We walked to the local hotel, where the fish and chips were passable. I resisted the advocaat, ice cream and chocolate sauce dessert (that's all one thing!), but the bread and butter pudding was EPIC! So I had to make it my blip. It saved the day from being a total disaster.
