Levada das 25 Fontes

I've done it. I've finally walked the levada that finishes at the spectacular 25 waterfalls.

I've wanted to do this one, and the Ribeiro Frio to Portela, since before I had my hip replaced. I managed Ribeiro Frio (with Visions of Chloe and Visions of Cumbria) last December and we all blipped.

Today it was the turn of the beautiful 25 Fontes. You start high up in Rabacal, with stunning views for miles. It's 1300metres high. Walking down for a few kilometres, you are greeted by tiny Bis Bis (like firecrests only tinier) and cheeky chaffinches.

Then to the Risco waterfall. Down the scary stone steps for a few kilometres and along the narrow ledges by the levada (many with handrails). There are bits where you balance precariously. Sheer magic, if you'll pardon the pun.

You arrive at the 25 waterfalls. Stunning.

Then you head back to the bus. 11k they say. And the final 2k is through a tunnel (torches provided).

And last night's concert by the students of the Conservatoire was marvellous. Such stars of the future, in the lush surroundings of the historical Palacio de Sao Lourenco.
