CannyScot's Day

Restenneth Priory

A bright, sunny day, milder than of late.

Our Grandchildren had a sleep over with us and were here until lunchtime. We had watched Comic Relief - a magnificent effort on the night and over 1 Billion pounds raised in 30 years. Thousands of needy children and adults have been helped in Africa and here in the UK.

After the children had gone, we headed out in the sunshine in the direction of Forfar and the surrounding area. We came across Restenneth Priory, which we had seen sign posted a couple of times before.

The Priory was a monastic house of Augustinian canons founded by, Jedburgh Abbey, with the patronage of King Malcolm IV of Scotland, in 1153. Although there is little literary evidence, archaeological evidence strongly indicates that there was a monastery at Restenneth from very early times. There is also speculation that it may even have been the Pictish church dedicated t0 St. Peter (mentioned in Bede) and built in 710.

If you would like to see some more photos of the Priory, see my Flikr set.
