Don't kid a kidder .....
The kitchen table is still groaning under the weight of the weekend papers, as yet unread. While having a little rummage through them at teatime, I came across the Observer Food Monthly.
Now, I don't mean to upset any of my lovely friends (and Family Dog) who are both gourmands and gourmets, but I hate this magazine! This
month it features , amongst many other items:
'From country gastropub to fancy Michelin restaurant, few self-respecting menus are complete without goat in some shape or form; be it slow-roast shoulder or caul-wrapped faggot. Goat is the new kid on the ingredient block'.
'In northern Italy, fat cows are revered. The hulking (picture of deformed looking creature, with more muscles than Arnold S) Piedmontese cow has its own festival and museum ..blah ...blah blah .. It is the start of the bollito misto season - the gelatinous flesh (my italics) you won't recognise will be its boiled "face". With luck there will be white truffles to eat in ... blah blah blah ...'.
'The hardest part about boudin is finding fresh pig's blood. If you find it raw but coagulated (Blippers - please excuse me while I rush to the loo for a quick heave) liquidise it with a blender'.
Honestly, I don't know whether to retch or gag first. Dis-gust-ing.
The great food obsession of this century is one of my all time rants. The amount of time devoted to cheap bad telly, where awful people cook awful meals, and then cry when someone else criticises them is completely ludicrous.. However, it is practically criminal to my mind to bleat (sorry goats) on about all these over priced ingredients, sourced from poor creatures which have effectively been bred nowadays to feed the appetites of the skinny middle classes.
The Guardian and the Observer used to be so very much better; I remember cutting out articles about the Vietnam war, and sticking them up on my bedroom wall as my only way of protesting against it (I was 10).
I wish they would go back to their good old Gruaniad days, and stop espousing this horrible food porn culture we are living in. It disgusts and offends me.
I do feel vegetarianism coming on.
