Knowehead Great Glen
Meet Glen our new beef shorthorn bull. Hes still a baby and wont be 2 years old until August this year so still has some growing and filling out to do. He seems to be settling in well and has been quite tired today which doesn't surprise me after his journey. He is in quarantine on our farm now, we have chosen him a bullock friend and have put him next door in the shed to keep him company. We have enough pure highland cows now that we bought a bull that will produce a more sellable calf for market.
Husband and I have juggled all the cattle around ready for calving next week. The cows are now in a smaller field right near the yard so if their is a calving problem its easy to get them in to the shed to deal with it.
The ewes are looking close to lambing and I am now walking round them twice a day. Changed the splint again on the ewe with the broken leg its looking good and the bones appear to be knitting together. In amongst all the work the equine podiatrist girls came to trim the horses feet. Husband and I were down at the farm beach at this stage and when we turned up they had found headcollars caught horses and nearly finished trimming. Great to have folk who just get on with it!! Barter system used again as they took meat in payment for the trims!! Super as the account is a bit empty after the purchase of the bull.
With such a busy day I was glad I had put a beef stew in the slow cooker for dinner and that I had baked a coffee cake for pudding!!
8c 15mph SE wind. Lovely sunny day until 3pm when a front came in on the wind can feel the rain in the air that we are due to get tonight.
