Artist's bracket galls

It's not every day you manage to make a record of Agathomia wankowiczii! This is the scientific name of the little Yellow flat-footed fly, which is unique in being the only insect to cause galls to form on a fungus. Its host is very specific, Artist's bracket fungus, Ganoderma applantum, and the presence of the galls is a sure-fire identification point for this species of bracket fungus. The fly causes these clusters of barnacle-like warts, inside each of which an egg is laid and a grub forms and develops. Once fully formed the grub bores a hole in the top of the gall to escape and fall to the ground, where it buries itself to pupate and eventually hatch into a new adult fly.
