The Lakes Trip 2015

Early this morning we set off on our annual Lakes Trip with the rowing club. Almost 30 teenagers and twenty parents, two mini-buses and a fleet of cars made their way up to Keswick. They had half an hour to throw their bags on beds at the hostel before Mark announced they'd be walking up Skiddaw as a 'warm up'. I know Mark's 'warm ups' and opted out instead going to my old friend Jayne who lives nearby and had offered to have me to stay so I could avoid the dorm sleeping and shared bathrooms.

She looked out the window and said 'Skiddaw? In this weather? I wouldn't do it….". Three hours later I arrived at the hostel to find the boys had jogged back with frozen hair due to the sideways sleet and heavy snow and wind at the top. They stripped to their undies in the drying room and steamed through the hostel to get into the shower before dinner. Other groups gradually made their way down, the less experienced only went half way before turning back but the older and more experienced did make it to the top.

One mum who's a cabin attendant with BA provided a tray of perfect G&Ts and we settled down to a less than lovely meal reminiscent of school dinners in the 1970s - yuk! I wished we'd self-catered again this year. After dinner we did our giant crossword and Easter egg hunt, and I called Josh who was home alone doing an intense Physics revision course and seemed to be enjoying having the place to himself.
