Fishing town

The fishing industry is still well entrenched along the Berwickshire coast, and European funding to help regenerate declining fishing communities a few years ago has provided a boost to the small town of Eyemouth, eight miles north of the border town of Berwick, if our view of the harbour is anything to go by.
It’s still the town’s principal industry and if you’re there early morning the fish market is a hive of activity.
The funding from the EU in 1997 was matched by local funds and resulted in the extension of the harbour to provide deep water facilities.
This is a real working fishing port and the scene is fascinatingly constantly changing, and alongside the fishing activity are Coastguard and deep sea going RNLI lifeboat bases, as well as a dive centre, and substantial shipyard. Yachtsmen are also making increasing use of the harbour and a walkon pontoon as one of the benefits of the funding has proved beneficial in attracting pleasure craft.
But to sample the town’s principal industry, you can’t do better than call on the town’s award winning fish and chip shops.

My early evening meal took me completely by surprise. Not just one, but two huge filets of haddock arrived on my plate and I knew I was in for a full evening’s taster.
