Smailholm Tower
We slept off the beef and the weather was better so we hit the road going south east. Melrose Abbey was impressive, the toasted sandwich less so. Then we meandered towards Smailholm, pausing to squint at Scott's View and to let the spinner stretch her legs. And then here, where Sir Walter Scott may or may not have lived at times; it was all less than clear. It was built by the Pringle family in the 16th Century and designed, as many of these places were, to keep the English at bay. Mostly successfully. It was a pity we had neither a tube of crisps, nor a diamond patterned golfing sweater, in their honour, but we admired the industry involved in creating this monolith as well as the views from the terraces on the top floor.
And then the pub was calling.
