Polling

Well the lovely thing was that I met my daughter at the polling station - this isn't her by the way. This is the Tory candidate for the council and Rowan introduced me to the UKIP candidate for the council who is a trauma surgeon at the local hospital and who drinks in our local. This is the first election at which Rowan and Cal can vote - all three children can vote and I've no idea how that happened.

I'm not posting this as a party-political image; Abigail was just standing there when I grabbed the photo. I'm not sure that she'll do well as the incumbent LibDem councillor is well thought of and does a good job. This is a very staunch Tory area where the votes could be weighed rather than counted and I don't think the current MP will be worried too much about the result (but of course I might be wrong!)

I now plan to have a snoozle and stick with the election coverage for as long as possible or until the outcome looks clear. I well remember the 1992 election where the polls put Kinnock's Labour ahead by 20 points and then narrowed but still predicted a Labour win. On the day the Tories received a (then) record percentage of the votes cast and stayed in power with a reduced majority. I do love it when the opinion polls are confounded. I was awake for the "Portillo Moment" in 1997 when New Labour surged to power. Tonight there are few certainties. I think Nicola will have a good evening even though she isn't standing for election - perhaps a fish supper and snuggled up on the sofa with a DVD. I hope that AL Murray does well as he has brought some humour to the election and dealt brilliantly with dreadful abuse on social media. Outwith that I think it'll be an interesting night and it could go to the wire.
