Schloss Ambras

On the second day of our visit to Innsbruck we went to the magnificent Scloss Ambras set in glorious parkland overlooking the city. When Archduke Ferdinand II became provincial soverereign of the Tyrol, he chose Ambras as a residence and in 1564 commissioned the remodelling of the medieval fortress into a spectacular Renaissance castle. The Habsburg Portrait Gallery, the Spanish Hall and the chamber of arts and curiosities are especially worth a visit.
