Tivoli

I survived my 3am start and arrived in Copenhagen at 11am. We found our accommodation, which we booked through airbnb and it was surprisingly lovely for the price. We even got to rent the company of a fluffy cat with the house. The owner Jacob had left a note recommending the "best ice-cream in Copenhagen" at the end of the street and he was right! We had the first of several delicious ice-creams then caught the metro into the city centre. We got off the metro at Kongens Nytorv and walked down Strøget, the worlds longest pedestrianized street. We stopped off for a coffee and the took a detour down Købmagergade to Rundetårn (round tower). The tower was built in the 17th century and we walked to the top, around its winding cobbling walkway for a view from the roof across the rooftops. Afterwards we continued our walk town the Rådhus (town hall). This also has a tower to climb but unfortunately only at certain times of day and we were too late. Instead we ventured next door to Tivoli.

Tivoli opened in 1843, with its grand western gate still present. It is a gardens and theme park. I had seen photos of Tivoli in many magazines especially at Halloween when it is all decorated. I was excited to go here and despite the cost went on a couple of rides. I took this photo from the chairs looking down at Copenhagen below (you can see to the right the red rollercoaster that I went on next). The park was full of lovely flowers so nice for a walk.

After the fair we walked to picturesque Nyhavn "new harbour" with its colourfull town houses along the river. We sat outside (under the heaters and blankets) for a meal of Danish meatballs and to soak in the atmosphere. It was a lovely first day to our Denmark trip :)
