A special place

Today I was taken to lunch at a very special place, the rather secretive, rather wonderful Special Forces Club. It was founded in 1945 by men and women who had served in the Special Operations Executive during the war, and is based in London. The club does not advertise itself, and is very discreet, so I won't say where it is or what it looks like, but this is its rather magnificent door knocker.

I went there as the guest of a lady who was in the SOE in wartime France. She is now in her 90s and frail, but with a strong spirit and deliciously dry wit. We all owe so much to people like her.
