What a day
We experienced!!! I can't even begin to describe it. But I will try :)
The place where we were staying is owned and run by a gentleman, Dennis O'Meara OAM, who was acknowledged by Australia for his work in replanting mine sites, back to the native plants. He is a wonderful, kind and gentle man. Well, in the morning we were all (12 of us) offered the opportunity to go in his helicopter and fly over the property and over the marble bar 2 at a time) and down the river bed. Awesome experience. His pilot is as rough as hessian bags, the antithesis of Dennis. And he had been just a little bit inebriated the night before (oops). But, when in Rome............
But wait! There's more!
So, that experience done and dusted (talk about dust!) it was decided by Lang, the pilot and Dennis, the prospector, that we should go in search of a massive natural wall of a rock called dolorite which Lang had seen but Dennis had not. Our convoy of 5 vehicles, all 4WD Set off for this "wall" we think only Lang had seen. After 3 hours drive we turned off the "good" gravel road and onto the "track" ( there wasn't one). OMG!! Then, we were helicoptered over to the amazing rock formation. It looked as though stonemasons had laid enormous
rocks as in a dry wall only massive! Then we were choppered back to our vehicles. And guess what! We had a flat tyre, in the middle of the mulga, in my brothers car, and we couldn't find the key to unlock the spare. So, in the best NW bushmans way, Lang got to it with a hammer and wedge!! That worked! Then the blokes decided it would be prudent to plug the TWO punctures in our front tyre. Thank heavens they did because after we parted company with the other 4 vehicles and were on our way south to Karratha, we had a blowout!! Shredded tyre, sun just going down, full moon rising and we were stranded in the middle of nowhere, no phone signal and no way of changing the tyre. Fortunately a guardian angel appeared, in his hi viz gear and helped us. Wouldn't take any money but I did tell him his mother would be proud of him.
We finally arrived in Karratha 3 hours behind schedule to find I had booked at a "lodge" in the industrial area of town - you have to laugh, surely......
We missed the staircase to the moon but will try for that tonight. Hopefully with Jen (Newcastle down under) who will be here later this afternoon :)
