Lost lives

This afternoon, we visited Gettysburg, where one of the major Civil War battles took place. The whole visit was an intense course in American history for us 'outsiders'. After taking in all that information I couldn't stop thinking about the lives lost...why was/is military battle needed to resolve political disagreements?
