Honestly, it's all go in rural West Cork. Yesterday saw the launch of Skibbereen Arts Festival and there's a jam-packed programme of art, films, music, theatre, poetry - you name it. I went off to Lough Hyne for a guided historical walk around its perimeters, dropping Himself off to attend a talk on creative mini book-making (just up your street Frieda!). The weather was good, the walk interesting and well attended as around 50 of us climbed hills, meandered down teeny roads causing havoc with nervous tourists tackling the very small and very steep roads - cyclists too, and ponies. We saw ring forts, a coffin stone where the pallbearers rested having just come up a massive hill, heard stories of local inhabitants including some truly dreadful ones from the Famine, marvelled at the time when 200 children attended three local school and swatted the incessant flies away. Lough Hyne itself is a marvel - incredibly deep, saltwater and home to some strange marine creatures. It also has a tide that takes 8 hours to come in and 4 to go out for some geological reason.
However, it was this wee girl that captured my eye - why can't big girls find these kind of clothes? I just loved her mustard cardie (worn very funkily back to front) her bright red dress, stripey leggings and leopardskin Doc Martens! She had the character to go with it too!
Back into Skib and I met Himself for a very late lunch then we mooched around the art trail -some really good work on display, and then went out to inspect a happening where archaelogists were combining with artists to create work based on Bronze Age finds using ancient methods. Not a lot was happening yet. A yurt was going up and the artists were complaining about the dog that had just rolled in something foxy.
And more tomorrow!
And the extra is a view from the top of the hill looking out towards Baltimore. That farm is for sale too!
