Summit of Place Fell

There is no way from this shot that you can get any sort of impression as to how windy it was on the summit. Going up the southern flanks of the fell was a pleasure, being assisted from behind by a strong wind, but on the summit plateau and the summit itself it was difficult to stand upright buffeted by howling winds unfettered by any shelter or obstruction. A piece of video I shot would give a sense of the power of the wind, but that can't be displayed on blip.

I think the wind was, if anything, a little less boisterous when we were up there compared with earlier in the morning when we were sitting at breakfast looking up at this fell with the driving rain, dark clouds, blue sky and flashes of sunshine as the weather cleared up after a very wet start. The clouds were racing across the tops with great ferocity, leaving rags and remnants clinking to the crags.

Once off the summit, the wind dropped to a gale as we descended towards Ullswater lake and onto the lakeshore path back to Glenridding - Susan's favourite walk and then to a repeat of yesterday - tea, bath, beer and wine and a good dinner. Last night tonight.
