Huacachina (ie Peruvian desert)
Sand boarding and dune bugging in this little town is a must do activity for all backpackers in Peru. Neither of us have been in a desert before so this was surprisingly beautiful. A little oasis is the centre of town, which exists purely for tourists wanting to get an adrenalin rush. That we did. Dune bugging involved a lot of Jess screaming as our driver put the accelerator to the floor to make it up giant sand dunes and back down the steep side! We then got to sand board down hills on a wooden plank of wood. Starting with the small hills, Jess learnt she couldn’t master standing up so rejoiced to laying on her stomach. Cam on the other hand mastered standing up, until we got to the last hill which was approx 300m steep. He chose the stomach option which served him well until the very end when a bump sent him flying off the board into a big cloud of sand! His embarrassment was larger than the couple of scraps and grazes he sustained. We are still finding sand in our ears and hair days later.
