Deer Park

at the magnificent Calke Abbey.

A super day with my university friend. She wanted to see a kingfisher. We went along and saw two.  They didn't stop to fish where we were but they flew past a couple of times. Then they headed for the big pool where the waters were less murky and we saw one of them perched amid the leaves. A long way away - but it was the kingfisher.

On to Calke Abbey, with its fabulous park, super gardens and very special house.  The National Trust took it over 30 years ago and are seeking to leave it just as they inherited it.  Full of eccentric clutter, a symbol of a grand stately home in decline..... fascinating.

And yes, an excellent Indian meal to round the day off...
