Rossall Point

Today's the day ......................... to observe

I don't think I've ever had a day when I saw SO many blippable things.

From the start there was the little boat that reminded me greatly of a floating bathtub that took us across the River Wyre from Knott End to Fleetwood.  There was the town of Fleetwood itself - and the walk out to Rossall Point where we saw lots seabirds but also kite surfers and sea anglers.  There were endless interesting things going on out at sea, including the Isle of Man ferry that ploughed backwards and forwards.  And it was funny to be looking at the other side of Heysham Power Station rather than the view we usually see looking southwards.  That also applied to the view of Barrow-in-Furness and the Lake District fells.

This is the wonderfully bizarre Observation Tower at Rossall Point - which in some funny way reminded me of the Lifeguard Lookout known as The Chair which Mrs Flying sometimes shows.  Unfortunately, it wasn't open today for observing from - but there were plenty of birds to see on the shore, like the Sanderlings below.

Oh - and an update on yesterday's strange structure out in the sea.  I'm pretty sure it is the remains of the Wyre Light  which stands two miles offshore. Built in the 1840s, it was a tower of wood and iron and its legs were sunk into the shifting sands using a technique developed by one Alexander Mitchell of Belfast.  It remained in use until 1948.  I've attached a picture of that too.
