Running Repairs
This Garden Orb Web Spider is one of hundreds in my garden at present, but this one has attached its web to one of the blades of a nearby Pampas Grass, and of course every time the wind blows, the web is broken. Every day, she spends time repairing the damage which is what my blip illustrates. Her body is massive, filled to bursting with eggs and in a few days time she will lay them in a silken egg sac. She will then spend the rest of her life protecting the eggs and because she will not leave them to hunt for food, she will quickly die of starvation long before her spiderlings hatch out next spring. My second photograph is of the same spider having a well earned rest after spending around 40 minutes doing running repairs to her web.
