The Rowan or Mountain Ash.
The Rowan's mythical roots go back to Classical times. Greek mythology tells of how Hebe, the goddess of youth, dispensed rejuvenating ambrosia to the gods from her magical chalice. When she lost the cup to demons, the gods sent an eagle to recover it. The feathers and drops of blood the eagle shed in the ensuing fight with the demons, fell to earth where each of them turned into a Rowan tree. Hence the tree derived the shape of it's leaves from the eagle's feathers and the appearance of the berries from the drops of blood. In Norse mythology, the first woman was made from the Rowan tree and the first man from the Ash tree. In British folklore it protects against witchcraft and enchantment, and in Scotland the berries were made into alcoholic drinks. This one, heavy with berries and turned to gold, is in front of my bedroom window. Maybe I would be rejuvenated if I sat under it ! Haha, worth a try.
