Montevideo exploring

Today was our last day here, so we started the day with a walking tour through the old town. We saw some cool buildings and learnt some facts about Uruguay such as they do not have an indigenous population because a president decided to kill them all many years ago.

After watching EVERYONE drink this tea like stuff called Mate all through Argentina and now here, we had to try it! You cannot buy it in a cafe, it's purely traditional and only consumed by locals. And they take it everywhere - on the bus, to the shops, to work, to their friends houses and to the park. They walk around with a thermos of water under their armpit and the cup in hand 100% of the time. After purchasing the special cup and tea leaf stuff, we had to get the hostel staff to prepare it as it's quite complicated. It tastes like very bitter green tea and you drink it through a metal straw. We liked it a lot, it gives you as much caffeine as a cup of coffee.
