THE TOMB OF THE EAGLES

Having resisted visiting South Ronaldsay during our first week on Orkney, though to be honest there was far too much to be seen on the Mainland to venture further, we now had a whole island to explore. We headed for the most southerly point and had a grand wander along high cliffs, watching Fulmars, Shags, and numerous Black Guillemots. The quay at Burwick was a blipper's delight.

On then to the Tomb of the Eagles and the Burnt House at Isbister. We are never going to have time to see all these wonderful places in two weeks. this blip is of the entrance to the tomb. You lay on the giant skateboard and haul yourself in along the entrance tunnel using the rope attached to the ceiling!

A cemetery back near the holiday cottage was our last stop and we were lucky to hear a Corncrake and get a brief glimpse of one. Whilst waiting for its call, I wandered in the peaceful cemetery overlooking the sea. Although I intend to be cremated and therefore will not have one, I find headstones very interesting.

We had booked for dinner at the restaurant just yards from the cottage that evening, and had one of the best meals I have ever eaten. Perhaps it would not be a good idea to live too close permanently!

Then home to sit and watch our view and a magnificent sunset. Thank you Orkney, the first sunset of our visit.
