Mystery to me

I pass this large cornfield on my way to and from work every day. Yesterday when I drove past, there was a man standing near a white truck, and he had a small fire burning at the edge of the field. This morning when I drove past, the entire field was black. I have no idea what happened between yesterday and today. I don't know if he burned the entire field, and if he did, why.
