Mr Chaffinch

Today's the day ...................... to flaunt it

With his blue-grey cap, pink cheeks and breast and a reddish-brown mantle, the male chaffinch is an unmistakeably handsome bird.  Trouble is - they know it.

I watched this one in the garden today just sitting there hogging the limelight.  Then he flew off down to Mrs Chaffinch who was patiently waiting for him.  They had a bit of Sunday afternoon nookie - and then he disappeared off to join his mates down in the pub.

Little does he know though, that despite their dominance outside of the breeding season, it will be the female that is the boss in the summer - with the male learning to keep his distance when he accompanies her around the breeding territory.

That'll learn him ........................
