Highgate Cemetery
An amazing day. The weather was just perfect for the visit I had arranged to Highgate West Cemetery for a group of friends, some Blippers (Hildasrose, Nicoiseannie, Radiogirl, JDO) and some Camera Club and some just friends. Highgate - and several other London cemeteries date from Victorian times when the pressure for burial space in London's churchyards became desperate.
We had a wonderful guided tour of the West side which is not open except by this method - too fragile and also dangerous in some places to allow the public to just wander. It is an incredible burial site and has been on my 'to do list' for a long time - many 'wow' moments. The light was fantastic and, for once, no photographer could moan about that!
We finished the tour in the East Cemetery where we could stay as long as we liked - we could also return later if we wanted. A few did stay but most of us headed up into Highgate Village for a spot of lunch. Then some went home, and some off to another part of London, so it was just Jane (Radiogirl) and me that returned to the Cemetery - just for an hour! Well, we were there until closing time - you just can't leave wonderful light and such a stunning environment until you're thrown out.
Jane and I were on the same train out of London parting at Amersham, but we resolved to visit another London Cemetery before too long. At the moment we are rather 'angelled-out' but this will pass and we will investigate more places of those who have lived!
A few extras to give the flavour of the place which I will remove at some point when my quota runs out
