Return to Philbrook
Now for a leisurely day at the magnificent Philbrook. There is so much to see...the house, the grounds, the paintings & sculptures...all perfection.
The main photo is the mansion from the summer-house at the base of the formal gardens. the first in EXTRAs is Saint Barbara! She is one of several insets in a very large carved and inlaid desk from Italy. The second is part of the Great Hall. The third is the Rotunda, which used to hold books and art on the balcony above. I keep snacks in my rotunda...how about you? They had a showing of "Legends of Design"...how everyday items were turned into an art form. The fourth is a compelling painting of a peasant girl who looks down a splendid Rococo hallway. The last is the Santa Fe Room. The Philips' ranch, a few hundred thousand acres, is located near Santa Fe.....the long painting at the end of the room is of part of the ranch. Mr. Phillips loved the ranch so much, he had this room constructed to reflect one in that ranch-house.
We enjoyed a session of "Art & Arias" that the Tulsa Opera performs every Sunday in the music room. Today's excerpt was from Samson and Delilah. Samson was played by a rotund, bald guy, but if you close your eyes, it'll work.
In 1938, only 15 years after it was built, Waite Phillips gave the villa, the massive art collection, the artifact collection and its 23 acres to the City of Tulsa.
