Above Cwm Cau on Cadair Idris

Fulfilled an ambition that's been 45 years in the waiting. In 1971 as a 17 year old A level geography student we spent a week on fieldwork based at Arthog in the Shropshire Outdoor Centre.

One of the days involved visiting Cwm Cau below the summit of Cadair Idris to study the effects of glaciation on the landscape. We went no further than the lake but since that day it's been my ambition to reach the summit of Cadair Idris.

Today, that ambition was realised with Susan and our walking friend Irene as we made our ascent by the Minffordd Path to the summit, going on to complete the full round of the mighty Cadair range in an epic walk that was worth the wait.

The forecast promised a good day but this seemed wildly optimistic as we drove to the start in rain and mist that persisted for the first part of the ascent. We met people who turned back at a wall crossing as the visibility was so poor.

We pressed on and were rewarded by a glimpse of blue sky far in the west that developed into a superb afternoon is sunshine and lovely cloudscapes. The views from the top were spectacular in all directions but particularly to the west and north over Barnouth and the Mawddach estuary.

There were so many shots worthy of inclusion today that it was difficult to choose just one to capture the day uploaded a selection of others to Flickr. Although I think there are better shots than this, my blip had to be a panorama of Cwm Cau from near the summit as the rain and low cloud moved away to the east.

So very fortunate and privileged to have a fine day on the summit of a fine mountain and to be in a position to fulfil a long held ambition.
