View from a train window along the Cambrian Coast

Another long held ambition partially achieved today. In 1972 after I finished my A Level exams I spent some time exploring Shropshire and mid Wales. One trip I made was to travel by rail from Wellington via Shrewsbury, Welshpool, Machynlleth and along the Cambrian Coast railway to Pwllheli. It took all day only allowing 30 minutes in Pwllheli before returning home.

I've long wanted to repeat this journey not least because the stretch of line from Machynlleth to Pwllheli is one of the finest railway journeys in the UK. The line along the coast of Cardigan Bay is up there with the Mid Wales line, Inverness to the Kyle of Lochalsh, Fort William to Mallaig or the Settle to Carlisle line.

Today we travelled from Aberdovey to Criccieth on what is probably the best part of the whole line. Magnificent views most of the whole of the hour and three quarters journey and at £7.80 return gave more stunning views per mile than seems decent.

We arrived in Criccieth in lovely weather, enjoyed lunch, then a long stroll on the beach, feet in the water, with time to enjoy an ice cream before repeating the journey back to Aberdovey. Once again I was spoilt for choice of today's blip but in the end it had to be a view from the train as we left Harlech on the return journey. You can see more on Flickr.

The day and on indeed the week ended with a good final meal out at a restaurant overlooking Lynn Tal-y-Lynn. A second consecutive day of days which could be even more momentous when the EU referendum vote is known.

Be a bit more of a struggle finding a blip which lives up to the last few days.
